Dr. Ernest Vender Quiroz

QUIROZ, Dr. Ernest Vender, age 62 of Grand Rapids, MI was born into eternal life on Wednesday, October 15, 2014.

Ernie will be lovingly remembered by his wife Mary of 38 years, his children: Kathleen (Matthew) Tate, Megan (Brian) McSween, Anne Marie (Neil) Sink, Jennifer Quiroz and Christopher Quiroz; his grandchildren Liam, Linus and Molly (Tate), Connor and Micah (McSween), and Moira (Sink). Ernie is also survived by his parents, Monica and Ernest of Phoenix, AZ and his four siblings: Rosemari, Gloria, Richard and Veronica.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 20th at 11 A.M. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 1935 Plymouth St S.E., Grand Rapids, MI 49506. Rev. Troy Nevins presiding. The visitation will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish on Sunday, October 19th from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. with a Rosary at 6:30 P.M. There will also be a one-hour visitation preceding the funeral Mass on Monday. Interment Cascade Cemetery. The Quiroz family would like to thank friends and family for all of their prayers and support, especially the communities of St. Mary’s Health and Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.

Ernie graduated from Michigan State University School of Medicine in 1980. He completed his residency at Mercy Health St. Mary’s from 1981-1984. He served faithfully in family practice with Mercy Health Physician Partners for 27 years, three of which he spent as Chief of Staff at St. Mary’s. Ernie was committed to the Hispanic community through his work at the Clinica Santa Maria.

Ernie will be most remembered for his sense of humor, genuinely joyful spirit, and commitment to his faith and family. He recognized and respected the human dignity in every person he encountered. Ernie was a model and mentor, inspiring men to authentic fatherhood. Above all, Ernie surrendered everything to Christ, the Lord of his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Saint Mary’s Foundation to support the Ernest Quiroz, MD Fund for Community Health Initiatives. This fund will support efforts at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s that focus on improving the overall health of our community including but not limited to educational programs, medical screenings, health assessments and research.   2. In remembrance: As an undergraduate at Loyola Marymount University, Ernie was a true leader in caring for those in the Latino community. His sense of humanitarian care was always a distinct part of his persona. He was a great inspiration to me, during some challenging times in my life. I feel fortunate
