Francis M. Backstrom

Francis M. Backstrom, aged 84, of South Carolina, formerly of Lowell, passed away peacefully December 28, 2022, with her children by her side. Francis was born May 26,1938 to Oscar and Ruth Backstrom.  She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Lucille; brother-in-law, Donald Videan; and son-in-law, Michael Bergy.

Francis is survived by her siblings, Margaret Videan, Arthur Backstrom, Ellie Herrington, and Cleo Doyon (Jane); her loving children, Martin (Renee) Kooiman, Jr., Mary Fry, Marlene (Mark) Clark, Amy (Kenneth) Stuart, Diane (Dale) Chiles, Susan (Jay) Block, Sally (James) Hoornstra, 29 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Andy Bolden.

Francis worked for Kropf Orchards before moving to Florida where she worked and retired from Walt Disney World. Francis loved a good cup coffee and conversation, sewing, working in her flower garden, travel and the beauty/meaning of Christmas.

Francis and her family attended Alton Bible Church for many years. She found comfort and courage through her daily devotions and reading her Bible.

A private funeral service will be held, with Pastor Ron Tuinstra officiating. Interment Alton Bible Cemetery, Lowell. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of one’s choice.

  1. Aunt Francis was a beautiful person. I enjoyed my many talks with her. She was always willing to help with any situation that popped up. I learned a lot from her. She will be missed.

  2. My heart is hurting because you are gone, but rejoicing because I know you are in God’s loving care. I am so blessed to have had these years with you. Your daughter, companion, confidant, and care taker. I will treasure our memories together for the rest of my days. I love you mom and I know you will be watching over us.
