Tobin Robert McCarthy, age 59, of Grand Rapids, passed away Monday, January 7, 2019. He was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Foley McCarthy. Tobin is survived by his wife, Betty McCarthy; son, Patrick (Anna) McCarthy; daughter, Mary McCarthy; father, Patrick McCarthy; sister, Maureen (Charles) Paluska; brothers, Timothy (Tracey)  McCarthy, Justin Thomas McCarthy and Terrence (Therese) McCarthy; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Russ (Barb) Tobolic, Tim (Suzi) Tobolic, Mary (Rick) Straub, Mike Tobolic, Julie (Rich) Schlipp, Steve (Kelle) Tobolic and Margaret (Dennis) Dykstra; and many nieces and nephews. Tobin would always light up a room with a joke. He had a passion for reading, learning and striking up a conversation. He had a special love for his family and friends. Visitation will be Thursday, January 10 from 5-8 PM at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd SE, Grand Rapids, and one hour prior to the funeral Mass at church.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for Tobin at 11 AM on Friday, January 11 at St. Robert of Newminster, 6477 Ada Dr, Ada, MI 49301. Rev. Leonard Sudlik presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tobin’s memory to Hearts of Hope Dog Rescue, PO Box 798, Rockford, MI 49341 or Mel Trotter Mission, 225 Commerce Ave SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. Tobin was loved by many. May he Rest in Peace.

  1. While looking for my Mother’s Obit I saw Tobins. Richards Drive holds many happy memories for me. I remember the Block Parties, the endless basketball games , and the unicycle at the McCarthy House.
    My heartfelt condolences to his family.
