Shirley Ann Compton died Thursday, May 17, 2018 in Cedar Springs, Michigan. Shirley was born June 3, 1934 in Lowell, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry on March 23, 2018; father, John Lewis Winks; mother, Louise nee Ryder; sister Sally Potts; granddaughter, Michelle Torres. Shirley graduated from Lowell High School in 1952 . She spent all four summers during high school singing on the Lowell Showboat. Shirley met Harry at Michigan State College. She graduated from Aquinas College with a bachelor’s degree in political science. Shirley retired from Aquinas College after working there for many years. She fully supported her children’s athletic, artistic, and civic endeavors. She was an accomplished handicrafter; she knit, crocheted, sewed, upholstered, and numerous DIY projects. She was an avid book lover, a happy gardener, and a keen bridge player. Shirley and Harry were active leaders in Marriage Encounter for over fifteen years. Shirley and Harry held season tickets for many years for the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Grand Rapids Civic Theater, and the Circle Theater. Shirley is survived by her brother, Ronald Winks; sister, Mary Kay (Frank) Wright; children, Shannon Compton, Michele Compton, Margaret Compton, Kelly J. (Bonnie) Compton, and James (Kelly K.) Compton; grandchildren, Tanya (Chad) Glerum, Jeremy Brough, Bethany (James) Sager, Justin (Rebecca) Brough, Nicholas LaFerriere, Christine (Adam) Hartley, MacKenzie (Matthew Fisher) Torres, Tyler Compton, Jordan Compton, Sara Weimer, Abagail Compton, MaKayla Compton; great-grandchildren, Lea Fisher, Shane Horstman, Sydney Glerum, Gabbie Fisher, Oliver Steele, Olivia Sager, Hunter Sager, and Judah Fisher. Shirley will also be missed by her friends Jack (Jane) Koning, Don (Susan) McClure, many nieces and nephews, and her Ryder, Roth, Hawk, and Stormzand cousins. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 23, 11:30 A.M. at the Roth-Gerst Funeral Home, 305 N. Hudson St., Lowell, MI. Friends may meet the family on Saturday morning from 10:30 until time of service. Inurnment of Harry and Shirley’s cremains at 4 pm in Myers Cemetery, 601 13 Mile Road NW, Sparta, MI. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or the Circle Theater of Grand Rapids. Funeral services provided by www.hesselcheslek.com
