CARNAHAN, ROBERT ELLET, age 86 of Grand Rapids, MI went to be with the Lord and Savior, Friday, September 9, 2016 at Porter Hills. He was preceded in death by Lanora Jane Carnahan, his wife of 58 years. He is survived by his daughter, Beth Young of Allendale, his son Dan (and Kerry) Carnahan of Redondo Beach, CA, his son Mike Carnahan of Grand Rapids, and his daughter Jill (and Mike) Pawloski of Caledonia, and his grandchildren: Megan and Bryce Young, Jackson and Carson Carnahan, and Jennifer and Amanda Pawloski.  Robert was born and raised in Lowell, Michigan and matriculated from Lowell High School. He then enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and served in active duty from January 10, 1951 – January 11, 1954. He often spoke fondly of his time on the U.S.S. Taney, having traveled to many places including California, Japan, Korea, Hawaii and Guam. He graduated as an electrician’s mate at the U.S. Naval Training Center in San Diego, California on November 21, 1952. After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, he found employment at Consumers Power Company where he worked for over 40 years as a lineman until he retired on August 21, 1995. He was very proud of working for the power company and rarely missed a day of work. He had a very strong work ethic which was a hallmark of his character. Robert was always a man of faith, allowing God to guide his life and devoted many years to ushering and serving at St. Roberts Church. He was consistently a reliable and trustworthy husband, father, grandfather, and friend. In addition he was always willing to go the extra mile for his family, loved ones and neighbors. A private memorial service was held at the O’Brien-Gerst Chapel, Grand Rapids. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 129 Jefferson SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49503 in memory of his wife Lanora Jane Carnahan.
