Patrick Michael Quinn passed away at the age of 89 on April 13, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Rita (Ronan) Quinn; his children, Sue (Todd) Buzzell, Brian (Michelle) Quinn, Tim Quinn, Cathy (Bennett) Mark, Patty Weiss; son-in-law, Tim Bredbenner; 11 grandchildren, Ryan (Lorenza) Buzzell, Kerry (Mike) Soltis, Brielle and Tara Quinn, Tom and Dan Bredbenner, Patrick (Kellie) Mark, Kelsey Mark and Evan, Kelly and Lainey Weiss; 4 great-grandchildren, Lyla and Julian Soltis, Harper and Madelyn Buzzell; sisters, Kathleen Quinn, Maureen (Quinn) Slade, brother, Michael (Rose) Quinn; brother-in-law, Robert Murphy; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Ann Bredbenner; brothers, Robert, and Thomas; and sister, Noreen. Pat graduated from Catholic Central High School, Class of 1951 and Aquinas College.
He spent his career working in the grocery industry, first in sales, then as Executive Vice President of D&W Food Centers, followed by CEO of Spartan Stores until his retirement in 1997. Pat worked and lived by his motto “People are the greatest asset of any corporation, and they should be treated that way.” He received many awards over the years including the Junior Achievement West Michigan Business Hall of Fame and Trimpe Distinguished Service Award by Western Michigan University. Pat served on a number of committees and boards over the years as well, including The Right Place, United Way, and the Aquinas College Board of Trustees for 16 years. Along with a group of his dear, lifelong friends he was a founding member of the Peacock Hunters Association and treasured his time with them.
Pat was an avid crossword puzzler and had a love of reading all his life. Pat and Rita spent many happy years dividing their time between Bonita Springs, FL and Grand Rapids in their retired life. They traveled the world together. He was adored by his family and loved nothing more than spending time with them. He was a friend and mentor to so many during his life and will be so dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to Catholic Central High School in memory of Patrick Quinn, Development and Alumni Relations Office, Cathedral Square Center, 360 Division Ave. S., Grand Rapids, MI 49503-4501. The family would like to thank all the staff at Porter Hills Village and Greenhouse homes for taking such great care of Pat in the last year.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, April 20, 2023, 12:00pm at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2750 Burton St SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546 with visitation one-hour prior. Msgr. Ernest P. Schneider and Rev. Peter Damian, concelebrants. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.
