Leona Rose (Stumm) Ashley, age 94, passed away quietly and painlessly at her home in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 4, 2015. She will be greatly missed by her son Robert, daughter Jan, son James, and the nursing staff of Porter Hills Village, who cherished her for her wry sense of humor and gentle nature. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Earl T. Ashley, and her daughter Carolyn Jean Davis. Leona was born in Detroit, Michigan, and studied dance at a young age, appearing in many stage performances with her sisters Virginia and Marie (still living) during the years of the Great Depression. She met her husband in Traverse City, Michigan, during World War II where she managed the books in a textile factory on a military contract. She moved to Grand Rapids at the end of the war with Earl and her first son Robert. Always on the ready with a sardonic quip, she loved to catch her loved ones off guard, and was a fan of antiques, music, wildlife, Garrison Keillor, and classic movies of all kinds. Leona seemed to adapt to her apartment, and the community at Porter Hills, with surprising serenity and good cheer. Even when she was not feeling her best, her disposition remained happy. A private memorial gathering was held.
