Janis Zigurds (Ziggy) Evele went to his heavenly home in the early hours of December 21, 2020.

Ziggy was born on May 28, 1934 near the town of Cesis, Latvia. During World War II, his family left their farm in Latvia ahead of Soviet forces. They traveled across Europe until finding themselves in a displaced persons camp in the American zone of Germany after the war. From there they traveled to the United States, working to pay for their passage in Mississippi, eventually moving to Germantown, Tennessee, then to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he met the love of his life.

Ziggy is preceded in death by his father, Janis V. Evele, his mother, Erna A. Evele (Karklins) and his brother-in-law Janis Klavins.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jane M Evele (Bosscher), his sister Gaida Klavins (Evele), his son Michael Evele and daughter Susan Salzwedel (Evele), as well as numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Ziggy was a man with a great sense of humor who took care of people whom he found in need. He was a man with a big heart and will be missed by many. He was an avid hunter and woodworker. He always made his family, and especially education, a priority.

In keeping with his wishes and COVID restrictions, the family will hold a private memorial service and burial. In lieu of flowers, Ziggy wanted to request contributions be directed to the Salvation Army.
