Florence (Michaloski) Carbonneau, age 94, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2021 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital with her daughter, son-in-law and dear friend by her side. Florence lived a full life and always looked forward to spending time with her family, friends, and neighbors. She had a generous spirit and never missed an opportunity to be kind to others. True to her welcoming nature, Florence always kept the front door of her home open as a gesture to say “join me for a cup of coffee” to all who passed by. She cherished her friendships and was diligent about sending cards on special occasions to ensure the recipient knew she was thinking of them. Florence liked to sew and was known for making one of a kind Christmas stockings for the newest of family members. Sharp and engaged, Florence was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles. She embraced technology and would often send messages to friends near and far via social media. Whenever Michigan State University was playing basketball or football Florence would text or call her friends with an opinion about the most recent score. Throughout her life Florence was active and traveled with her husband Jim. The two delighted in bringing people together, especially on Halloween, the 4th of July, and on Christmas. Even in the final days of her life Florence enjoyed lunch outings with friends, receiving homemade dinners and soups from neighbors, attending church, visiting with the neighbor’s dog, and participating in neighborhood gatherings and family celebrations. As Florence’s health declined she remained determined, optimistic, and always grateful. Florence’s strong faith provided her with comfort and reassurance as she passed on to her eternal life. Florence attended Union High School in Grand Rapids and helped plan many class reunions. After high school she went on to Wayne State University and then to Butterworth Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1951. After her career as a Nurse, Florence continued to serve the hospital as a volunteer with The Junior Diet Kitchen Guild of Butterworth Hospital for several years. Florence is intensely missed and survived by her daughter, Janet Carbonneau-Jones (Marty Jones), beloved cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Carbonneau of 51 years, and her mother, Sophie Michaloski.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the health care providers at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital and to SHMG Concierge Medicine for providing Florence with compassionate and personal care right to the end.
