DONALD W. VANPORTFLIET

Donald W. VanPortfliet, age 92 of Grand Rapids, passed away December 1, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents Adrian “Tut” and Hazel VanPortfliet; his loving wife, Millie (2013); and son, Ron (2013). He is survived by his brother, Ed (Gert) VanPortfliet; adoring grandsons, Derrick (Emily), Jay (Kelly); daughter-in-law, Sue VanPortfliet; sisters-in-law, Irene Stellard, Bonnie Boven; brother-in-law, Ray (Pat) Boven; also several nieces and nephews. Don owned and operated Don’s Sunoco in Eastmont and later Earl’s Auto – Fulton Street in Grand Rapids. He proudly served in the Army during WWII, and was awarded several medals of distinction. Don loved feeding and watching the wild birds and taking care of stray animals. The family will meet with friends and relatives Friday 12-1:00 p.m. at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd. S.E., Grand Rapids, with Military Honors at 1:00 p.m. under the auspices of Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. Interment Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
