Carol Monaghan, age 76 of Rockford, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. Born in 1944 to the late Connie and John Mannarelli in Huntington, WV. She was preceded in death by her husband Tom of 51 years. Carol is survived by her children, Tom Monaghan, Trish (Joe) Castiglione, Kristi (Mike) Byrd; grandchildren, Michael and Madelyn; sister-in-law, Peggy (Marv) Shapiro; niece, Lisa (Paul) Lambert; nephew, Jeff (Katie) Shapiro. She also loved her dog, Irish, like a child. Carol graduated from Seton Hill College in Latrobe, PA. Carol, Tom and family moved to Michigan in 1977 where Carol worked in the Kent County Public Library system. Boating and spending time with friends and family were some of her happiest times while living on Big Brower Lake in Rockford. Two of her favorite places were the lake house and the casino. Carol especially enjoyed visits to Chicago cheering on her grandchildren’s games and activities. Living with Parkinson’s disease since 1988, she was one of the first in the country to successfully undergo DBS surgery and was under the care of one of her favorite people and noted neuroscientist, Dr. Leonard Verhagen. She and Tom also loved to travel with family and friends, visiting many countries around the globe, often enjoying cruises with dear friends.
A COVID-safe Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, February 5, 2021, 11:00 am at St. Robert of Newminster Church located at 6477 Ada Dr SE, Ada, MI 49301 with visitation from 10-11:00 am at the church. Interment Courtland Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to support Deep Brain Stimulation Research at Rush University Medical Center.
