Vera Sturgeon Van Velsen of Grand Rapids passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the age of 88.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dean Van Velsen; Vera is survived by her children, Raymond (Louise Sommer) Van Velsen, Russell (Luzaira) Van Velsen, Janice (Bob Campbell) Van Velsen Scharich; three cherished grandchildren, Samuel, Simon and Seth Scharich; brothers, Ed (Joan) Sturgeon, Carl (Linda) Sturgeon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vera earned her bachelor’s degree in teaching at Michigan State University. While working and raising a family she completed her master’s degree to further support her vocation. Vera taught for 30 years at Forest Hills Northern High School in the areas of home economics, child development and health sciences.
Throughout her life, Vera enjoyed many pursuits, often related to nourishing, nurturing and creating for her friends and family. She especially relished time with her grandsons. She also enjoyed opening the family home to host dinner parties, bridge night, bridal/baby showers and holiday celebrations. Using her teaching skills, she passed along her love of cooking, baking, sewing and quilting to others. Vera was a long-time member at Ada Congregational Church, active in the choir, book club and social justice group. Her other interests included gardening, reading, tennis, camping and traveling.
Those who knew Vera got to experience her gift of connecting people, the creativity she used to show love, and her passion for celebrating together. We will miss her greatly but will carry all she has done in our hearts. A private celebration of life will take place for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Faith Hospice.

I have many great recipes from Vera, but the one that holds the most memories is Interlochen Stew. My brother, Ryan, always requested extra artichokes too. lol
