Thomas, OP, Sister Margaret formerly of Lansing died on December 20, 2024, at Aquinata Hall in Grand Rapids. She was 96 years old and a Dominican Sister for 77years.
Sr. Margaret began her education in a one-room schoolhouse with only fifteen students. She continued her education at Aquinas College receiving a BS in Chemistry, studied Educational Administration at the University of Colorado, and received an MS in Physics from the University of Mississippi.
Sr. Margaret loved teaching. She taught and was principal at many schools across Michigan.
Sr. Margaret loved reading, hiking, cooking, downhill skiing, running, and photography. It brought her great joy to travel, climb mountains, garden, and do crafts with children and their families. Sr. Margaret loved to explore the world and share what she learned with excitement to others.
Sr. Margaret’s experiences in life helped her recognize the dignity and strength of the human spirit.
She will be missed by family and friends and remembered with gratitude for her generous spirit.
Sr. Margaret is survived by her brother, Fred (Sharon) Thomas, sister-in-law, Iris Thomas, as well as many nieces, nephews, family and friends, especially Sister Sharon Ford, RSM, as well as members of her Dominican community.
Sister Margaret will repose at Marywood Chapel of the Word, 111 Lakeside Dr. NE, with a Remembering Service at 9:00 am on Tuesday, December 24, 2024. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am following the remembrance service at Marywood Chapel of the Word. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Margaret’s name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters.
