NELLETT, OP, Sister Julia, of Grand Rapids, was gently called home to God on July 4, 2026, at the age of 80, after 62 years of joyful and faithful Dominican religious life.
Sister Julia, remembered for her warmth, hospitality, and faithful service, was born November 4, 1945, to Chester and Mable (Badour) Nellett. She and her twin sister, Jennie, joined brothers, Chester and Henry, in the family.
Close throughout life, Julia and Jennie entered the Dominican Sisters together on September 8, 1963. Julia received the name Sister Marcus and later returned to her baptismal name after Vatican II.
From 1966 to 1980, Sister Julia served in food service in Traverse City, Grand Rapids, and Mt. Pleasant. She earned a Certificate in Food Service Management from Fontbonne University in 1975, strengthening her ministry.
She later became a hairstylist, bringing kindness, care, and a listening heart to salons and community settings in Grand Rapids, Essexville, and Cadillac.
Later, she served as Car Care Coordinator until health challenges led to her retirement.
Wherever she lived and ministered, Sister Julia offered warmth, humor, kindness, and a welcoming spirit.
Loved by family and friends, Sister Julia is remembered with gratitude for her faithful care and generous heart.
Sister Julia will repose at Marywood Chapel of the Word, 111 Lakeside Dr. NE, with a Remembering Service on Tuesday, July 8, 2026, at 9:00 am and Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 am. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Julia’s name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters.
