Richard “Dick” Haines, age 92, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2026.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Ada Haines, and his brother, Tom Haines. He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Carol Haines, with whom he shared many wonderful years; his children, John (Susan) Haines, Dave (Andrea) Haines, and Caroline (Paul) Freihofer; his grandchildren, Sam (Nicole) Haines, Zach (Brianna) Haines, Joe Freihofer (Abi Teme), and Anna Freihofer; his great-grandchildren, Pierce and Rosemary Haines; and his brother, Fred Haines.

Dick grew up in Ohio, attending grade school in Columbus and Celina, and later spent a short stint at ‘The’ Ohio State University. He proudly served in the United States Army, carrying that sense of duty and quiet strength with him throughout his life.

He built a long and steady career, ultimately finding his place at Reader’s Digest, where he worked for 24 years.

Dick had a lifelong love of staying active and curious. Whether he was out on the golf course—playing well into his mid-80s—casting a line while fishing, shooting hoops, playing softball, or biking around Reed’s Lake, he embraced life with energy and enthusiasm. He also loved to read and write, always eager to learn something new. Dick and Carol enjoyed traveling the world together, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Above all, Dick will be remembered for the joy he found in his family. Nothing meant more to him than time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His steady presence, warm heart, and love of life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held at 1PM on Friday, May 8, 2026, at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Funeral Home, 3980 Cascade Road SE., Grand Rapids, Michigan, 49546, with a Celebration of Life following at 2PM.
