Phyllis Jean VanderVliet (Rykse), age 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

Phyllis was born on May 14, 1938, and lived a life marked by kindness, patience, and a deep love for her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jeanette (Steenwyk) Rykse and Neil Rykse; her parents-in-law, Joseph and Marie VanderVliet; her brother, George Rykse; and her brother-in-law, Gordon Arnoys.

She is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 67 years, Henry VanderVliet, and their four children: Debra (Richard) Meindertsma, Henry (Sandi) VanderVliet, Mike (Rhonda) VanderVliet, and Jennifer (David) Koning. Phyllis was a proud and caring grandmother to ten grandchildren: Mike Meindertsma, Lexie Meindertsma, Joe (Samantha) VanderVliet, Bill (April) VanderVliet, Matt (Courtney) VanderVliet, Kyle (Chris) VanderVliet, Michelle (Tyler) Demski, Bennett Koning, Jake Koning, and Jordan Marie Koning. She was also blessed with six great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sister, Marge Arnoys; her brother, John (Pat) Rykse; her sister-in-law, Kit Rykse; and her sister- and brother-in-law, Gary and Marlene Knottnerus.

Phyllis graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1956 and was known for her strong work ethic and keen attention to detail. Gifted with numbers, she worked as a bookkeeper for Crosby Insurance Agency and later served as secretary at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church during the 1980s.

In her younger years, Phyllis enjoyed sewing and lovingly made countless dresses and suits for her children. She and Henry shared a love for travel, especially along the shores of Lake Michigan, where they spent many summers camping and enjoying its beautiful beaches. Later in life, they continued their adventures traveling across the country and to Italy.

Above all, Phyllis’s greatest joy was her family. She was a constant and supportive presence in her children’s lives, never missing a game, performance, or special moment. She cherished her role as a grandmother as well, faithfully attending her grandchildren’s many activities and celebrations.

Phyllis had a deep and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ that guided her throughout her life. She found great comfort and joy in listening to hymns, and her quiet strength and gentle spirit reflected her faith in all she did. She is now at peace in the presence of her Savior.

A private family service will be held on April 24, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan.
