Michael Andrew VanderWall, age 78 or Grand Rapids, Michigan passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2025. He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew; mother, Dorothy; and brother-in-law, Bill. Michael is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joie; children, Michael (Nicole), Robb (Sara), Amy, Angie; grandchildren, Nathaniel, Emma, Lauren, Luke, Isaac; sister, Cheryl; sisters-in-law, Janice, Donna (Bob), and Rhoda (Ron).
Michael graduated from Kendall School of Art & Design, with an associate’s degree, majoring in Graphic Design. He was a Veteran of the United States Naval Reserve. Michael served during the Vietnam era, and was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After serving, he was able to couple his business and artistic skills, and founded Michael VanderWall Graphic Design, which he ran for over 35 years. In his spare time, Michael enjoyed the outdoors, spending his time kayaking, fishing, or exploring new trails. He also liked biking and tennis. Michael was able to create in all mediums, including painting, pen and ink, and photography. He cherished the time he was able to spend travelling and creating memories with his wife and family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Funeral Home, 3980 Cascade Road SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49546, with visitation starting at 1pm.
