Michael Bernard Kettner

Michael Bernard Kettner, loving husband, father, and grandfather of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2023. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Lowell where his family moved when he was a young boy and graduated from Lowell High School. Michael enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for two years as a Yeoman in the Engineering Department on the USS Vermilion based out of Norfolk, Virginia, until his honorable discharge. He was employed by the Kent County Probate Court for 30 years until his retirement. Michael married the love of his life Diane at Faith Lutheran Church and celebrated 51 years together. They have one son Chad. They enjoyed traveling the world together. He also enjoyed gardening in his spare time.

Michael was such a wonderful, gentle, and kind-hearted man. He will be remembered for his caring and thoughtful ways and generous spirit, always putting others before himself. He had a wonderful sense of humor that could brighten your day. Above all, Michael enjoyed spending family time with his loving wife Diane, his amazing son Chad and sweet wife Kellie, and his two awesome grandsons Zachary and Christopher. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Harold George and Greta Alida (nee Hunter) Kettner, and his brother Harold Grant Kettner. He also was predeceased by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Michael is survived by his wife Diane, son Chad and wife Kellie, grandsons Zachary and Christopher, and sister-in-law Elizabeth Kettner. In addition, he is survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Funeral arrangements by Gerst Funeral Care. A private funeral and graveside service will be held for his immediate family with interment at Oakwood Cemetery in Lowell.

A Celebration of Life open house for family and friends to share memories will be held on Friday, July 28, from 4-7 pm, at Roselle Park, 1010 Grand River Drive NE, Ada, Michigan 49301.

  1. I am sadden to hear of Mike’s passing. I worked with Mike for over 20 years at the Probate Court. Mike always had a smile on his face, and went above and beyond helping the public who came to the court for service.

    I always love to hear the stories of his travels with Diane to faraway places. He knew how to explore the area he was visiting and was able to describe his adventures with much enthusiasm.
