Michael Abraham

06/28/2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Abraham. He passed away on June 28, 2024 at age 45. Michael touched many with his bright mind, curious nature, passion for storytelling, and endless excitement to explore cosmic questions.

Born in Grand Rapids, MI on October 13, 1978, Michael attended Stepping Stones Montessori School and, later, East Grand Rapids High School. Throughout his childhood, Michael proved to be a talented percussionist, leading the EGR High School Drumline and playing in local rock bands. Michael was a loving older brother to his four younger brothers, with whom he would maintain close bonds for life.

After high school, Michael attended the University of Michigan where he graduated with a degree in philosophy. Michael then worked for several years on Capitol Hill, and later received his M.B.A. from UNC Business School, Kenan-Flagler.

In 2009, he moved to New York City, where he began to build his career in investment banking and his life with his wife Andrea. He spent several years at Bank of America and pursued other ventures in the industry. When he wasn’t working, he followed his passions and sought to expand his horizons. He was an avid reader, with enthusiasm for physics, philosophy, and science fiction. He was a creative thinker and was always interested in developing unique perspectives, finding intriguing observations about seemingly well-trodden subjects. And, he was passionate about technology and loved exploring the frontier of what new science could power.
Then in 2015, a new era kicked off in Michael’s life when his children, Tag and Riven, became the center of his universe. He was enchanted by their every move, and over time he sought to instill in them curiosity, kindness, and passion. As the kids grew, he joyfully shared in their excitement for fantasy. They explored the magic of games and movies. And to Michael, the boundaries were limitless: he dreamed as big as they did, with games, toys, and creations taking over the entire home. Michael loved his kids endlessly.

Michael is survived by his two wonderful boys, Taggart (9) and Riven (6), Andrea Abraham, and his deeply loving mother, JoAnn Abraham, brothers Anthony (Sarah) Abraham, Matthew (Michelle) Abraham, Nicholas (Laurel) Abraham and John (Antoine Chatin) Abraham, cousin David (Heidi) Franklin, and his uncle Matthew (Rebecca) Maloley. He was preceded in death by his grandmother MaryAnn Maloley and grandfather Jim Abraham.

Michael’s family will greet family and friends on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 (from 2-4 and 6-8 PM) at O’Brien-Eggebeen Gerst Funeral Home, 3980 Cascade Rd. There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 beginning at 11:00 AM, at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 2250 East Paris Ave. SE. A luncheon celebrating Michael’s life will be held immediately following at the church for all guests. Interment will then take place at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to either East Grand Rapids School Foundation (see here) or STEM Greenhouse to support science education for children in need in the Grand Rapids area (see here).

Rest in peace, Michael. Your strong spirit will remain in our hearts and minds forever.
