Mary Kay (Phillips) Nelson, age 79, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by the love of her family. Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend joyfully went to be with Jesus on May 11, 2026. Mary Kay loved fiercely and wholeheartedly, always putting the needs of others before her own. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcomed, cared for, and deeply loved.
She was born on October 15, 1946, and she was in the graduating Class of 1964 at Lowell Senior High School. Lowell was always home to Mary Kay, and throughout her life she built countless friendships and memories within the community she loved so dearly.
The greatest love of her life was her husband of 60 years, Dan. The two were rarely seen apart, and their marriage was a beautiful example of loyalty, laughter, friendship, and unconditional love. Married on October 23, 1965, Dan and Mary Kay built a life centered around family, faith, and making memories together. Their love story was one admired by everyone who knew them.
Together they traveled across the United States in their motorhome, enjoying scenic drives, national monuments, color tours, road trips, and countless adventures together. They also enjoyed spending time visiting casinos throughout Michigan, but no destination ever mattered more to Mary Kay than wherever her family was gathered. She never missed a family reunion, holiday celebration, sporting event, school activity, or special occasion. Being present for the people she loved was one of her greatest joys.
Mary Kay had a special way of staying connected with everyone she cared about whether through handwritten cards, thoughtful phone calls, or simply checking in to make sure someone was okay. She genuinely cared about people and carried their joys and struggles in her heart.
She was also known for her incredible cooking and generous spirit. No one ever left her home hungry, and if someone was sick, struggling, or simply needed comfort, Mary Kay would have a homemade meal prepared and delivered in no time. Caring for others came naturally to her, and she did it quietly, selflessly, and often without recognition.
Mary Kay and Dan spent 16 cherished years as snowbirds in South Daytona, Florida, where they formed lifelong friendships and created so many treasured memories together. She was a devoted Elvis fan and loved attending Elvis festivals and tribute performances with her sister Nancy (“Sissy”) and dear friends, singing along to every favorite song. She also looked forward to monthly lunches with her Lowell High School classmates, where stories, laughter, margaritas, and friendships were always shared.
Mary Kay dedicated 34 years of her life to Amway, where she was respected for her hard work, loyalty, and dedication. More than anything, Mary Kay will be remembered for the love she gave so freely. She was the heart of her family — a constant source of comfort, strength, laughter, and unconditional support. Her presence made life brighter, and her absence will be felt deeply by all who knew and loved her.
Mary Kay is survived by her loving husband, Dan Nelson; daughters, Kellie Hirdes (Doug Hirdes) and Melanie Hefron (Chris Shire); grandchildren, Bailey Smith (Ryan Hubler), Trevor Smith, Malorie Hefron (Blake Nichols), Walker Read (Sophie Brefka), Macie Keffer (Landen Keffer), and great-granddaughter, Addison Hubler; nephew Michael “Bueford” Napieralski (Kelly Napieralski). Also brothers, Bruce Phillips (Teresa), Jerry Phillips (Sue) and sister, Nancy Nead (Dennis) and brother-in-law Gary Nelson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clare and Mary (Bailey) Phillips, mother-in-law, Emma (Blumberg) Stowell, brother-in-law, Larry Nelson, and both sets of grandparents.
A Celebration of Life service will take place at 11AM on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Lowell United Methodist Church, 621 E. Main Street, Lowell, Michigan, 49331, with visitation one hour prior. Pastor Brad Brillhart officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow the service. Interment at Bailey Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Lowell.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing Mary Kay is now at peace and reunited with loved ones and ELVIS who went before her. Her love, kindness, traditions, and beautiful spirit will continue to live on through her family and all those fortunate enough to have known her.
