Mary Jo Wood

Mary Jo Wood, age 88, went to be with her Lord on Friday, July 4, 2025. She was born June 16, 1937, to Cornelius and Leona Oonk of Holland, Michigan.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, James C. Wood; and her brother, Dan Oonk. Mary Jo is survived by her sister, Pat Doolitte; sister-in law, Beth Oonk; her son, Thomas (Wendy) VandeWater; the Wood children; Leslie Cowlishaw, Jim (Linda) Wood, Tom (Lynn) Wood,  Mary Schumaker (Duane); grandchildren, Ben (Natalie) VandeWater, Sam (Saige) VandeWater, Max (Meghan) VandeWater, Matt (Stephanie) Severance, Elisha (Jeff) White, Sarah (Justin) Gregory, Alex Wood, Katie Wood, Taylor Wood, Connor Wood; 9 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Jo loved her family and friends selflessly. She was kind to everyone around her, always willing to go to great lengths to help anyone. Mary Jo was devoted to God, her faith, and church. A talented artist, she enjoyed singing and did often with the Sweet Adelines. Mary Jo was also gifted at sewing, painting, and drawing. She loved traveling, especially in the winter months, with her husband on Marco Island, Florida.

Mary Jo glowed of grace and compassion in every aspect of her life, including in her success as a businesswoman. She will be remembered for her giving heart and unconditional love for all.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1449 Wilcox Park Dr. SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49506, with visitation one hour prior. Rev. Stephen Durkee presiding. Memorial Contributions can be directed to St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.

Tom, Wendy, and family… Kevin and I are so sorry for your loss… The few times we were at your home around Mary Jo she was such a delightful, thoughtful woman, and we could tell how much she appreciated the love and care you and all of the kids and grandkids shared with her for so many years. We’re both thinking of you all from Boston and sending love and hugs.
