Mrs. Mary Ilene Dudeck, age 79, of Lowell, passed away April 29, 2026, in the early hours of the morning on the 58th wedding anniversary she shared with her beloved husband, Louis Dudeck. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.
Mary will be dearly missed by her husband, Louis Dudeck; their children, Kevin (Julie) Dudeck and Wendi (Brad) Potter; grandchildren, Avery Lupton and Grant Lupton (fiancé Elese Carey); and her ever-faithful Pomeranian, Bear.
She was the daughter of John and Mildred Essenberg. Mary graduated from Muskegon High School and went on to attend Western Michigan University, where she earned her teaching degree. She devoted her life to caring for young children, teaching early childhood education in several schools, including Vicksburg and Reeths-Puffer. She also spent several years as director and teacher at the United Methodist Preschool of Lowell before completing her career and retiring from Saranac Elementary School.
Mary loved spending time with her many friends. Whether wintering in Florida or summering in Michigan, she was always ready for fun. Playing cards, visiting the Moose, golfing with her league, scrapbooking, shopping, and dining out brought her great joy.
She especially loved spending summer days at her “Happy Place,” the cottage on Blue Lake. There, she cherished time with family and friends and shared a special bond with her sister-in-law, Lorri Essenberg. Blue Lake held a particularly meaningful place in her heart—it was just down the road where she met a handsome Marine, recently returned from the Vietnam War. While working at the Boy Scout camp snack bar (famously boiling hamburgers), she met Louie, who had been sent there to recover and teach riflery. Taking a chance, he asked her out, and they became engaged just a few weeks later.
Nearly 58 years later, Louie would credit Mary with saving his life. Just two days before her stroke, she insisted on calling an ambulance, ensuring he received the emergency surgery he needed.
Mary was a devoted caretaker of her family and friends. Her heart knew no limits. She made sure everyone felt loved and valued, often insisting you accept drinks, snacks, or thoughtful little gifts she believed you might enjoy. She always gave more than was needed—whether you realized you needed it or not.
A visitation to share memories of Mary will be held on May 22, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Roth-Gerst Funeral Home, 305 N. Hudson St. SE, Lowell, MI 49331.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Mary’s love for her little “Baby Bear,” memorial contributions may be made to Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary, 8935 Thompson Rd., Lake Odessa, MI 48849, or Kent County Animal Shelter, 740 Fuller Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.

I’m so sorry for your loss Uncle Louie, may God have you in the palm of his hand and comfort you. Revelation 21:4 promises , He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.
Love and prayers,
Lynda
I am so saddened upon hearing that my beloved friend, Mary, has recently passed away. I have such wonderful memories of raising our children together since they were babies. She was such a wonderful friend to so many but the love and care that she showed her children and grandchildren was very important to her. May God wrap His loving arms around her family and bring them love and peace during this difficult time. I love you, dear friend! 🥰❤️

Dear Uncle Louie and cousins Wendi and Kevin. My sincere condolences. My hope is that you will find joy in the memories you had together. I treasure the memories of our family gatherings in Bloomer. I will keep you all in my prayers during this difficult time. Love you! Diana Dudeck Carthel
So sad to hear this news. Mary was a special, kind, loving person. I knew her from preschool and the Tuesday night ladies golf league. She always had a smile and encouraging words for everyone. She was so much fun to be around. Although she is gone her spirit and the light she carried with her will be here forever. Prayers for her family that she loved so much and special prayers for “my Louie” as she always called him.
