Leonids “Lee” Barbans, age 96 of Grand Rapids, formerly of Rogers City, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2026.
Lee’s earthly bonds have broken, the pain is gone and he is now in the loving arms of Jesus.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Maralyn Barbans; and his son, Michael Barbans. Lee is survived by his stepson, Raymond A. (Chris) Punches Jr.; stepdaughters, Tammi L. (Michael) Harvey, Joni L. (Craig) Pantelin; grandchildren, Angela Miedema, Ginger (Ben) Beaudin, Shawnell (Erica) Pantelin, Nicholas (Dez) Pantelin; 8 great-grandchildren; and 3 great great-grandchildren.
Lee immigrated to America from Riga, Latvia, in 1949 at the age of 19. Before becoming a citizen, he joined the United States Army in 1950 and served his adopted country during the Korean War. Lee was wounded in battle by shrapnel and was awarded the Purple Heart. After returning home in 1953, he received treatment for his injuries and proudly became a United States citizen.
In 1954, Lee began working at GM diesel plant in Wyoming, Michigan, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. He often joked that he was happily retired longer than he worked! Lee enjoyed traveling with his wife, especially to Hawaii, his favorite destination, and spending winters in Texas to escape the cold Michigan weather. He took great pride in his beautiful lawn, which he kept meticulously mowed and manicured like a golf course.
He enjoyed golfing and woodworking. Lee could build nearly anything out of wood from a picture he found in magazines. Above all, he loved his family, good food, his pets, and life. He often said, “It’s all about attitude, attitude is everything.”
Lee will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial contributions in Lee’s honor can be made out to any animal shelter of choice.
