Kimberly (Kim) Loomis left us far too early in life, as she lost her two-year battle with ovarian cancer on July 20, 2026. She was born March 21, 1966, to John and Jeanne (Adadow) Wurts in Ann Arbor, MI. (Kim’s mom passed in 2016).
Kim and her sister Kay were raised in Ypsilanti where the girls were avid dancers, girl scouts, and musicians (Kim played the saxophone). The family moved to the south side of Lansing in the fall of 1980 when their father got a job with Fisher-Body there.
Kim’s family had most always attended church, but her faith found root when she went to hear the testimony of 1980 Miss America Cheryl Pruitt, who told the story of God healing her after a childhood accident that had left her with one leg shorter than the other. As Kim listened, she began to wonder, “If God could do that for Miss America, what could God do for me.” At the altar call at the end of the service Kim found herself impelled to go forward to accept Jesus as her Savior, and to be filled with the Holy Spirit. That day Kim found a faith that she would hold onto all the days of her life.
The family began attending South Baptist Church in Lansing where Kim and Kay were very active in the youth group there. They also attended Gardner Junior High and Everett High School, where both girls performed in the marching band, and where Kim graduated from in the spring of 1984. She went on to attend Lansing Community College for a year while she figured out what she wanted to pursue in college. Kim had always struggled in school due to the learning disability dyslexia, something that had only been diagnosed while she was in high school. Kim decided that she wanted to teach kids to overcome their own disabilities. So, she attended Grace College in Winona Lake, IN for 3 years in order to become a special education teacher, however she was unable to graduate because the school failed to adequately assist her with her own needs.
Kim had many jobs over the years after she left college, the two that would be most meaningful to her would be as a Para Pro at Washington Woods Middle School, working with kids with disabilities, and then as an optician at DOC in Lansing, and at VisionMax in Petoskey, MI.
In 2000, Kim decided to move to Charlevoix to see if her long distance relationship with her boyfriend of the time could progress to something more, she soon realized it wouldn’t. But she stayed where she was because God told her to, “Be still, and know He is God.” She did it, and while there she took an Emmaus Walk that brought her into a closer relationship with Jesus. Her Emmaus and Bible Study friends encouraged her to stay involved in Emmaus, and to serve on a weekend in August of 2001. It was at an Emmaus Team Meeting that summer where she met the man God had for her in Scott Loomis. They dated for about a year before they were married at the Charlevoix United Methodist Church on September 14, 2002.
They lived in the Charlevoix/Petoskey area for 10 years before God brought a change to their life, no not children, but a calling, as God called Scott to be a pastor. Kim wasn’t too sure about being a pastor’s wife but realized that it was God’s calling. So, in June of 2012 they moved to serve at the Pine River Parish, two United Methodist churches in LeRoy and Ashton, MI. Eventually they added a third church with a congregation in Luther, MI, in all they spent 9 years in that area. Next, they were called to Vergennes Church in Lowell in June of 2021. That was one church, but with no parsonage so they had to find a house to live in. They served in that church for 4 years before moving on to serve at Delton Faith and Hastings Hope Churches in 2025. Kim was always a bright star of God’s love and grace in the churches and communities where they served, being active in Operation Christmas Child, singing in a community choir, volunteering in a kindergarten class, and coming along side people who were hurting or struggling in life. Her love of others seemed at times to be boundless, as she reached out bring the hope and love of Jesus.
Cancer tried to rob Kim of her joy, as well as her faith, hope, and love, but it never could, though it did rob her of her purple hair. Throughout the two years of successful and failed treatments Kim held on to her love of God, family, friends, and all things purple. She even served on an Emmaus Walk just a few short weeks after undergoing chemo.
Kim is survived by her family including her father John J. Wurts of Lowell, MI, sister Kay and brother-in-law Randy Becker of Troy, MI, niece Sarah of Grand Rapids, MI, and nephew Jon of Troy, MI.
She is also survived by Scott’s family, sisters-in-law Lynda Loomis of Independence, MO, and Lori Chapman of Byron Center, MI. Also, by brother-in-law Graham Chapman of Eaton Rapids, MI, nephews Matt (Jenn) Chapman of Troy, NY, Jesse (Sam) Chapman of Eaton Rapids, MI, Steve Chapman of Byron Center, MI, Josh (Chrissie) Chapman of Battle Creek, MI and Tully (Kitt) Chapman of Wyoming, MI. And not to be forgotten are great nieces and great nephews Justin, Nora, Renee, Fiona, Sutton, and Tully Jr. All who knew her will miss that smiling face, and easy laugh!
A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Saturday August 29 at Hope United Methodist Church at 2927 M-37, Hastings, MI. The day will begin with a visitation at 10am, service at 11am, and lunch to follow at the church. Please come dressed relaxed, and wearing purple if you can! In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the scholarship fund for the West Michigan Emmaus Community, PO Box 283, Manistee, MI 49660.

I’m so sorry to hear of Miss Kim’s passing. I took my grandson to a summer event at Vergennes Church. Kim came up asked if she could sit down, I said yes. She started chatting with me, asking my name and how I was liking the event. I felt Kim was genuinely interested in our conversation and made you feel at ease. I attended Vergennes Church for awhile (I switched to another one that partnered with them but didn’t know that at the time, for the youth group for my grandson). I was surprised to find out that she was in fact the Pastor’s wife. She never once told me that she was the Pastor’s wife. She was a beautiful soul and I will always remember our conversation that day and how it made me feel like I wanted to go to church again. Thank you Kim. Prayers for her family 🙏🪽❤️🩹
Such a gentle and kind person, always cheerful with a smile. The spirit of the living God is deep within her soul. Rest in peace, Kim. We’ll see you again. Resurrection, New Creation – that’s the divine promise.
Kim was the most positive person ! And it was clear that this came out of her deep faith in Jesus, her Lord. Mary Ann and I have both been blessed by her and by Scott, through our involvement in Emmaus. We are a small part of the world that will be missing her cheerful personality this year.
