Jonathan Edward Carlson, 45, of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away after a courageous fight with cancer over the past year. Jon left us far too soon, but he was a warrior until the end—choosing to take his best shot at more time with the people he loved. He went out swinging.
Jon was born to Edward and Maureen Carlson and was a devoted husband to his wife Leanna. He was a loving father to Carolyn, Colin, and Olivia. He is also survived by his brother, Ben (Cortney) Carlson; sister, Sarah (Thomas) Bradford; as well as his in-laws, Tom and Carol Perko; sister-in-law, Johnna (Bill) Shields. Jon was a cherished uncle to Libby, George, Kate, and Logan. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Palmer and Virginia Carlson and Frank and Virginia Kennedy.
Jon earned a Bachelor of Arts in Finance from Grand Valley State University and a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Georgia. His career was dedicated to public health, most recently serving as Director of the Public Health Infrastructure Program at the Centers for Disease Control.
Jon had an unmatched zest for life, always seeking adventure and new experiences. He pushed his own boundaries—and encouraged those around him to do the same—in the best way possible. Whether taking trips, biking, kayaking, or visiting his family cabin, he embraced life fully and inspired others to do the same. His love for his family and friends was unwavering, and he had a rare ability to bring people together, building lasting friendships along the way. His sharp wit and easy laugh made him someone people just wanted to be around.
In honor of Jon’s life, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
Jon’s legacy is one of kindness, dedication, and an unshakable spirit. In honor of Jon, we invite you to celebrate his life with us on March 8, 2025, at the Donnelly Center on the Aquinas campus in Grand Rapids from 2 PM to 5 PM. Please join us in dressing for the occasion—cocktail attire preferred—as we raise a glass to a life well lived. May we all carry forward his adventurous spirit, his love for family and friends, and his drive to make the most of every moment.
