John Neis, of Hudson Florida, passed away peacefully while in hospice care on November 30, 2022.  He was preceded in death by his father, William L. Neis; and two brothers, Thomas M. Neis and Matthew J. Neis. He is survived by his mother, Virginia R Neis; three sisters, Mary White (Dick), Cathy Neis (Jay Fowler), Anne Neis; his brother, William B. Neis; and Matt’s partner, Sara Arrington. Also surviving are nieces, Michelle Fry, Mellissa Russo (George), Emily Fowler, Tess Bradley (Joe); and nephews, Joe Casares (Jennifer) and Riley Neis. In addition, he will be missed by great nieces and nephews, and many friends.

After graduating from Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School and the Kent Skills Automotive program, John worked at Eckberg Motors in GR for a number of years. He then went on the road with his brother Matt to work for the Skip Barber School of Race Car Driving. They traveled the US for 17 years, teaching celebrities, VIPs and other hot shots defensive driving skills and doing pit crew work at Daytona and Sebring among other tracks. After settling in the Clearwater Florida area, he worked at Clearwater Cylinder Head with his brothers Tom and Matt for about 20 years.  After retiring to Hudson, he tinkered with cars (his and others), worked odd jobs and was generally a good and helpful guy to all he knew.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 20 from 5 pm to 7pm at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd. SE, Grand Rapids.  A rosary will follow at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 21, at 10:30 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1449 Wilcox Park Dr. SE, Grand Rapids. Those wishing to honor John’s memory may make a donation in his name to the St. Thomas Education Foundation at the parish school at 1429 Wilcox Park Dr. SE Grand Rapids 49506.
