James Oscar Hale “Ozzie”, age 97 of Grand Rapids, passed away Friday, July 5, 2024. He was preceded in death by parents, Oscar J. and Lorena Hale; sisters, Fern Algee, Lucy (Don) Fitzgerald, Joy (Bud) Laug, and Barb (Bob) Carlson; and brother-in-law, Philip Sidwell. Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois Hale; children, Marty (Michelle) Hale, Connie (Mike) Gall, Amy (Sean) Feyen; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Sidwell; and many nieces and nephews. Jim graduated from Central High School in 1944 and then served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He attended Grand Rapids Junior College and Western Michigan University as a Phys.Ed major. Jim worked as an insurance representative for over 40 years. Sports were an important part of his life. He was an avid tennis player and golfer, winning several championships throughout his lifetime. Football, baseball, and basketball were among other sports in which he excelled. The common thread throughout Jim’s life was his strong faith. He served his church in many ways, his favorite role being that of a long-time member of the choir. Jim’s sense of humor, dedication to family and friends, and positive outlook had a lasting impact on all who loved and knew him.
A memorial service is planned for 1pm on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, 7495 Cascade Road SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546, with visitation one hour prior. Light refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Forest Hills Presbyterian Church.

Jim was always so fun at Wednesday night choir practice and he had a fine voice. He was a cheerful friend. My sympathy to Lois and family.
