James Gregory Clay

James Gregory Clay, known to many as Jim, passed away on October 17, 2025, in Grand Rapids, MI, at the age of 90. Born on October 13, 1935, Jim graduated from East Grand Rapids and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Colgate College. He proudly served in the United States Navy, traveling extensively and holding deep pride in defending the nation during the Bay of Pigs crisis. Following his military service, Jim and his sister Celia acquired a small printing and coating company in Sparta, MI. Under his leadership, the company flourished guided by his deep commitment to quality, innovation, and people behind the brand. A dedicated and resourceful individual, Jim was also a self-taught handyman who enjoyed tinkering around the house. Jim shared a deep bond with his beloved wife, Patricia. Together, they explored the world, visiting many countries and enjoying numerous cruises. Jim did love his winters spent in Florida. He was a devoted Michigan State fan, faithfully attending football and basketball games with family and friends. Boating and watching the koi in his pond brought him great joy. Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons Michael Clay and David (Kerry) Clay; Tom (Jennifer) Overly; and Jennifer (Richard) Oversmith. He is also survived by his sister, Celia Said; brother, John Clay; and grandchildren Emily Clay, Katie Clay, Megan Clay, Courtney Clay, Nicholas Clay, Benjamin Clay, Guinevere Overly, Sydney Oversmith, and Maya Oversmith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Kindel, and George Clay; and brothers Christopher, Ralph, and Thompson Clay. Jim will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and love of storytelling. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. Celebration of Life will be held from 12-3pm, Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the Cascade Country Club, 3725 Cascade Rd, SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546. In lieu of flowers, a gift can be made to the Richard McNamara Fellowship at Corewell Health Foundation, 25 Michigan St. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503 or call 616-391-2000.
