Hilda H. Reed

Hilda H. Reed (Miller), 99, of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2025, just 28 days short of her 100th birthday. Born on February 21, 1925, in Bowling Green, MO, she was the sixth child of Louise and Tony Miller.

Hilda graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1942. On February 16, 1945, she married Bill Reed in Monahans, TX, just before Bill left for World War II service. After the war, she moved to Michigan, where she spent the rest of her life. Throughout her nearly 80 years in Michigan, Hilda was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother known for her warmth, generosity, and vibrant spirit. Her classy and sophisticated style also left a positive impression on all who knew her.

Hilda was active in her community throughout her life. She participated in Caledonia school affairs and Holy Family Church activities during her children’s education. Her dedication to service led her to join the Red Cross, where Hilda worked at blood banks around Grand Rapids and assisted at St. Mary’s Hospital. She was also a longtime St. Robert’s Church and Cascade Hills Country Club member. And during Bill’s successful business career, they traveled the world together on vendor trips.

Hilda’s passions included gardening, painting, and playing cards. She was an avid card player, participating in many groups who will cherish her memory. Her daily happy hour cocktail became a cherished tradition, bringing together family and friends to share stories and laughter.

In their later years, Hilda and Bill divided their time between Grand Rapids and Torch Lake in Michigan and Sarasota, Florida. They enjoyed the company of many friends, golfing, boating, playing cards, and other retirement activities.

Hilda was preceded in death by her husband Bill, daughter Peg, and grandson Eric. She is survived by her sons Mike (Judy), Russ (Karen), and Tom (Dawn). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Dave (Pagiel), Stacey (Lars), Jason, Nicole (Justin), Shad, Samantha (Chris), Meredith (Mark), Andrew (Kate), and Jessica, as well as 13 great-grandchildren.

The immediate family will be hosting a gathering in Hilda’s honor for extended relatives and friends on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at St. Robert of Newminster Catholic Church (6477 Ada Drive, Ada, MI 49301).  There will be a visitation at 10:00 AM, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, and then concluding with a Celebration of Life at noon.
