Frederick Ernest Miller, beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on April 23, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, John C. Miller and Dorothy Miller (Ward); brothers, Keith and Alfred Miller; and his son, Jon C. Miller.
Fred is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rose Miller; son, Travis (Emily) Miller; daughter, Nicole Miller; and grandchildren, Demetrius, Tori, Nikola, and Kahliya.
Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Fred spent his youth in the Saranac and Lowell areas, where he worked alongside his father in the family business, Miller Plumbing. He graduated from Saranac High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Army. Fred attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was stationed in Germany, where he made many lifelong memories and friendships.
Following his military service, Fred attended Michigan State University and completed its turfgrass management program. He and Rose were married in 1971 and began their life together in Manistee, Michigan, before eventually settling in Gaylord. There, Fred worked for Michaywé and helped build the golf course’s original “Front 9.” He later became co-owner of Turf Chemicals Inc. and continued his career working with several golf courses throughout Northern Michigan.
Fred was deeply committed to his community. He proudly served for many years as a volunteer firefighter with the Waters Fire Department Post. He was also a dedicated Scoutmaster for Troop 14 with the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the Order of the Arrow. One of his greatest joys was mentoring young scouts and leading a group on an unforgettable adventure to Philmont Scout Ranch.
Fred will be remembered for his strong work ethic, adventurous spirit, love of the outdoors, and dedication to his family and community.
