Frank Raymond Steed, age 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Lowell, Michigan on Sunday January 11th, 2026, surrounded by his wife and family. Frank lived a full, joyful life defined by hard work, music, laughter, and an unwavering love for his family – especially his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, who were the center of his world.
Frank married the love of his life, Mary Moomey, at just 18 years old. Their marriage spanned more than 70 years and was built on partnership, humor, devotion, and deep affection that continue to inspire. Together, they raised four children and created a family that continues to grow and gather – often loudly, often joyfully, and always with music at the heart of it.
A lifelong musician and educator, Frank spent many years teaching music to students at Kent Occupational High School, where he shared not only his musical skills, but modeled discipline, provided encouragement and instilled pride in doing things well. Music was never just something he did, it was who he was.
Frank loved all styles of music and played with too many great musicians to mention. His passion was Dixieland and he played in many groups, starting with the Muscat Ramblers and retiring with Wally’s Warehouse Waifs. Whether playing stand-up bass or simply filling a room with rhythm and warmth, Frank always made the music better.
Frank believed in working hard and enjoying life fully. He loved golf, loved music, and loved making everyone laugh with his jokes, which Frank delivered with a grin that let you know he was enjoying it just as much as you were. He had a positive outlook, a deep appreciation for life, and an uncanny ability to lighten any moment. Everyone was so excited to see Frank enter a room. Frank lit it up and instantly lifted the mood. He was the Fun. He was the Music. He was the Warmth.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Violet and Clayton Steed; six of his siblings, Jack Steed, Charles Steed, Robert Steed, Mary Lou Marsh, Sally Fleming, and Barbara Steed. He was also preceded in death by his son, Scott Steed, whom he loved dearly and carried in his heart always.
Frank is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Steed; his children, Jerri Steed, Chuck Steed, and Doug (Roxanne) Steed; his eight grandchildren, Josh (Abby) Steed, Jessica (Paul) Montagne, Steven (Tiffany) DeYoung, Sam (Anna) Steed, Clayton (Taylor)Steed, Savanna Steed, Aubreigh (Tommy) Alberts, and Gabe Steed; and nine great-grandchildren, with another on the way. He is also survived by his siblings, Walt (Judy) Steed and Pat Blok.
Frank’s legacy is one of joy, music, humor, and love. He influenced lives through the lessons he taught, the songs he played, the jokes he told, and the family he adored. Frank will be deeply missed, and remembered with a smile, by all who were lucky enough to know him.
There will be a celebration of life to honor Frank at a later date. Update on details to follow
