Edward J. Gavan, of Grand Rapids Township, passed away February 9, 2024, at age 97. He was raised and educated in Detroit, MI. He was preceded by his wife of 63 years, Mary Kathryn “Kay” (Arnold) Gavan; brothers, Robert A. (Eunice) Gavan of Allegan and Charles T. (Geraldine) Gavan of Phoenix, AZ, and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by daughter, Patricia M. (Daniel) Mahler of Grand Rapids; sons, Brian A. Gavan of Wickenburg, AZ and Joseph P. (Susan) Gavan of Belmont; grandsons, Jack E. and Charles P. Gavan; step grandson, Elliott J. Mahler of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Alice C. O’Connor of Grand Rapids. Ed was a combat veteran. He served in the Pacific, China and Korea. Ed was a life member of both the 1st Marine Div. Assoc. and the Marine Corps League and was a past Commandant of Detachment #151. He, also, was an ordinary member of the Royal Canadian Legion Post #84 Royal Oak, MI. Ed was a contract administrator at Lear Siegler, Inc. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11am on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at St. Robert’s of Newminster Catholic Church, Ada, MI, Rev. Tony Russo presiding, with visitation one hour prior. Memorial Contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. No flowers please.
