Donna Ruth (née Sandberg) Hoffhines, born April 2, 1935, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2026—just four days shy of her 91st birthday.
Donna was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, William “Bill” Hoffhines; and her sons, Michael and Mark Hoffhines. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Daniel (Heather) Hoffhines; daughters-in-law, Abby Hoffhines and Dr. Marilyn Wright; grandsons, Matthew (Bri), Carl (Katherine), Adam (Sami), Kyle (Amber), Everett, and Anderson; and great-granddaughters, Grace, Layne, Leighton, and Parker.
Donna was born in Peoria, Illinois, and spent her childhood through high school in Battle Creek, Michigan, graduating from Battle Creek Lakeview High School in 1953. She went on to earn her teaching certificate from Michigan State University in 1957. That same summer, she married Bill and began her career as a kindergarten teacher.
She had a deep love for animals, especially her dogs, and in her younger years enjoyed horseback riding. A proud “boy mom,” Donna rarely missed a game or sporting event and found great joy in supporting her sons. She cherished time spent up north in Glen Arbor and along the shores of Lake Michigan. Donna was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and P.E.O., and she took great pride in creating a warm and loving home for her family.
Known affectionately as “Big Swede,” Donna will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, and aunt whose kindness and love touched all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Friday, April 17, 2026, at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Funeral Home, 3980 Cascade Road SE, Grand Rapids, with visitation one hour prior. Interment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan.

My condolences to her family. Donna and I met at FHN when my family and I were new to the area. She will always be one of my favorite people. I am sorry we lost touch over the years and miles. May she rest in Peace.
