David McDowell Jr.

David McDowell Jr., age 88 of Grand Rapids, passed away on June 16, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Ellen McDowell Sr., siblings, Betty Martin, Sally Sampson, Eileen Betcher, Pauline Crawford, John McDowell; parents-in-law, Richard and Laura Johnson; sisters-in-law, Betty Kaminska, Bonnie Jackson; nieces and nephews, Craig Jackson, Janyce VanDeVort, Michael Jackson, Denise Zimmerman. David is survived by his wife, Shirley McDowell; children, Richard (Melody) McDowell, Douglas (Nenia) McDowell, Patricia (Robert) Ojeda, Daniel (Kristin) McDowell, Scott (Amanda) McDowell; grandchildren, David McDowell, Jason McDowell, Stephanie Clarke, Scott Braden, Jordan Ojeda, Brandon McDowell, Hannah Ojeda, Caleb Ojeda, Aaron Ojeda, Abigail McDowell, Kathryn McDowell, Conor McDowell, Sinead McDowell; 14 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Dean Betcher; sisters-in-law, Phyliss McDowell, Pat Dirosa; 18 nieces and nephews; and many friends in Florida, Detroit, and Flint, MI. Dave attended Cass Tech and graduated from Northwestern High School in Detroit, Michigan; and went Wayne State University. Together with his wife Shirley, they owned and operated a successful home improvement company for 25 years and passed it down to two of their sons. He enjoyed coin collecting and reading about history, but his most favorite time was spent with his loved ones. A memorial service will be held from 1-2pm on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Road SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.
