It is with heavy hearts we announce that David Austin passed away suddenly on October 22, 2025, at Meijer Heart Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
David was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Pre-deceased by his devoted parents, David and Mildred Austin, David was a loving husband to Ellie Austin, a very caring and cherished father to Catherine, Linda, and Jonathan, father-in-law to Donielle Austin, Ewan DeSilva, and the late Dr. Tim Durrant, proud grandfather (Pa) to four wonderful grandchildren, Jacob, Max, Sydney, and Leah.
David grew up in the Leaside area of Toronto, attending Leaside High School and Leaside Presbyterian Church. His deep faith guided him throughout life, and he remained a devoted Christian.
After many years in the trucking business, David served as executive vice president of Direct Systems. Later he was appointed as president and chief executive officer at Interstate Motor Freight in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1984, he left Interstate to purchase his first love, Direct Systems as chairman of the board.
Throughout his life, David approached each day with a blend of wisdom, humor, and humility. His legacy lives on through his family and the countless lives he touched with his intelligence and sincerity. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Would like to offer a special thank you to Meijer Heart Center, especially Dr. Scott and the many precious staff members that helped David and his family. And a special thank you to Chaplain Matthew.
A visitation will be held at 1 p.m. and a funeral service at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 3rd, at Cascade Christian Church, 2829 Thornapple River Dr SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Cascade Christian Church.
