Betty Pauline Chidister, age 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 13, 2024, at American House nursing home in Spring Lake, where she had resided since 2019. Born on March 7, 1930, in Lowell, Michigan, Betty was raised on a farm where she learned the values of hard work and faith that would guide her throughout her life. Soon after graduating from Lowell High School, she began a long and dedicated career at Lear Siegler (now GE Aviation), working as a lab technician in the instrument division from 1951 to 1984. Betty was proud to contribute to the creation of parts for aircraft, missile and space equipment. Through her work for Apollo 11, we touched the moon. After retiring, she spent her winters at Southern Pines in Bonita Springs, Florida where she enjoyed the sun, beaches and community activities.
Betty married her first love, Donald Everling, on June 25, 1948. Their 55-year marriage was a testament to their enduring love and commitment until his passing in 2003. In 2004, Betty found love again with Jack Chidister, and they enjoyed 15 years of happiness together before his passing in 2019.
A lifelong Christian and member of the Christian Reformed Church, Betty’s faith was central to her life. Her deep belief in God provided her with strength, and she regularly attended church, nurturing her strong spiritual connection.
Betty was known for her artistic talents, particularly as a gifted painter whose work was admired by many. She also won numerous medals in archery and enjoyed hobbies such as stamp collecting, boating, gardening, and genealogical research. She was passionate about planning family reunions and hosting family gatherings, where her love for family shone brightest. Betty’s travels took her on adventures across the U.S. and to destinations including Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and even an African safari.
In her later years, Betty’s greatest joy came from her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her “GG.” She was a devoted grandmother who loved spoiling her grandchildren, completing crossword puzzles and playing card games like Phase 10 and Hand & Foot. Betty will always be remembered for her sharp wit, her warm heart, and her unwavering love for her family.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Cornelius Plooster; her siblings Jacob Plooster, Harold (Jean) Plooster, Evelyn (George) Hatfield, and Dorothy (Herman) Huisman; her daughter, Linda Bruinekool; her son-in-law, Jon Bruinekool; her daughter-in-law, Connie Everling; her grandson, Jaimie Everling; and her great-granddaughter, Destiny.
She is survived by her children: Darla Zwiers, Donald Everling Jr., and Gary Everling; her brother-in-law, Floyd Everling; her grandchildren: Todd VanMaurick, Dennis (Tina) VanMaurick, Wendy (Dan) Frank, Sara (Bruce) Perdok, Joni Parcher, Amy Bruinekool, Wendy Everling, and Christie (Carl) Russell. She was also blessed with many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish her legacy of love. In addition, she is survived by her loving stepchildren: Mark (Peggy), Katherine, and Randy (Bobbie) Chidister and their children, who were an important part of her extended family.
Betty spent her final years in the loving care of her family and caregivers, and despite the challenges she faced, her spirit and smile remained gentle and kind. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A 10:00 am -12:00 pm visitation will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024, at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Funeral Home, 3980 Cascade Rd. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546, where family and friends will gather to celebrate her remarkable life. Graveside service at Cascade Cemetery following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Betty Pauline Chidister leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and cherished memories. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know her.
